Rain and Mr. President...
...got in the way!
As you all know, I am a part-time photographer. I book a limited...very limited number of sessions each month. So when my session gets cancelled because it rains, it can make things complicated. May's weather this year was tricky. This session I am featuring today, was scheduled for a Saturday evening in May. About 3 hours, before my session time it started raining... actually pouring. The rain came down pretty steady and about 30-40 minutes in, I decided to contact my client to come up with a plan. In my mind, we had two options; 1. move it inside, but the question would be where? or 2. reschedule. I was definitely in favor of rescheduling, especially since option one was not solid.
She answers and I explained that it is raining on my side of town, which was only about 10 minutes from the location we chose for the session and we should consider rescheduling. She replied, that's strange because I just got here and it wasn't raining when I came in. I am at the mall getting my makeup done. First thoughts were "oh no, what do I do now." The makeup artist had already started applying her makeup so we HAD to shoot.
I asked her which mall was she at and I immediately started racking my brain for a location on that side of town. I hopped in my car, thinking and racing the storm which was probably headed her way. As soon as I got on the track...the race track that is, I remember, Mr. President was in town. Streets were blocked, roads where detoured and it was STILL raining.
White staying in constant contact with my client in regards to the storm, traffic and locations. I decided to just take a few shots are her home. I was on the highway, and it was obvious at that time, the storm was headed her way. Plus, she had her makeup done. We would look at rescheduling or going with this session depending on her level of satisfaction. Which I totally understand because her home was not what she had in mind for her family portraits. I got to her home and she mentioned a gazebo in her neighborhood. We raced to the gazebo, or at least I felt like I was racing. It had not started to rain... but it would at any second. With 10 minutes of shooting, I managed to crank out about 8 poses WITH a then 8 month old. I was moving and grooving. The last 2 minutes we were shooting in the rain.
That was an experience....sheeesh!..... not sure what I learned from that but it definitely made me download The Weather Channel app.
Anyway, long story short, they LOVED what we got from their 10 minute session, but I was going to re-shoot without a question. They did not get the full experience and the experience is an important part of custom photography. Two months later, we met up again for part 2. I was amazed at how much their little guy grew.
Here they are.... the most understanding and laid-back family I've ever worked with. Thank you guys!
